Psychotherapy, Counseling & Coaching
What is the difference between Psychotherap, Counseling & Coaching
Counseling and psychotherapy are very similar,
they are used interchangeably but they have differences.
In essence,
Counseling is like when you have a specific issue
which is causing some disturbance or problem in your life in any way.
Like there is a faucet in your bathroom that needs fixing, or,
you decide to redecorate your house, you see your house lacks color,
or there is a rip on your sofa, or your furniture needs to be upgraded.
You will paint the wall, change the upholstery, bring in fresh flowers,
buy a new book rack. That is what counseling is like….
Taking one little thing that you are not satisfied with or that thing is
causing some disturbance, so you work on that.
Once the issue is addressed you don't want to go back to your
counselor until there is another thing you want to address.
Psychotherapy however is based on psychodynamic approach,
it deals with the embedded messages and how we have learned to
function based on our past experiences.
Like you feel there is very little sunlight in my living room,
then you need to create a bigger window,
or you don't like the wall between two rooms,
then you will make some structural changes in your building
Coaching however is like finding routes to your house.
If one route does not work you can explore different other ways that
will take you to destination.
You can also pave a route of your own.
they are used interchangeably but they have differences.
